Adopting a pet is an exciting and rewarding experience! Our adoption process is designed to ensure the best match for both you and the animal.
Adoption Process
Our foster-to-adopt program lets you take the time to see if your new furry friend is the right fit for your family, your home, and even your other pets—before you make it official. It’s like a trial run for happily ever after.
You get to enjoy all the joy (and zoomies!) of welcoming a pet into your home, while we help with food, supplies, and support to make the process easy. If it’s a match, hooray! You’ve found your new best friend. If not, no worries, we’ll take the animal back into our care and keep working to find their perfect home.
Here’s the steps to meeting your next family member:

Approval
A phone interview and home inspection will be scheduled. If approved, we’ll begin the process of matching you with the right adoptable animal.
Foster Trial
We'll bring your potential pet to you for a trial period to see if it’s a good fit. You’ll care for them like one of your own, with feeding, exercise, and TLC while we provide support. The animal will live with the potential adopter, but is still owned/under the care of by MHS.
Every pet and family is unique, so we’ll work out a flexible trial timeline together. If things don’t work out, that’s okay! We’ll take the animal back and keep looking for their perfect match.

This is a trial period that helps to make sure that the animal is a good fit for your home.
During this period the animal is still in the care of MHS and we’ll cover food, supplies, transport and veterinary fees.
After the trial period we can proceed to adoption and transfer ownership to you. If it’s not a good fit, we’ll collect the animal and you don’t have to deal with trying to rehome them.
We consider this a win/win situation for the adopting family and the animal!
-
We do not have a physical location and currently rely on a network of foster homes to support our rescue efforts.
We allow you to meet the pet through our foster-to-adopt program. This trial period allows you to get to know the animal in the comfort of your home.

Yes, we take pride in providing excellent care of our animals. This means:
All our animals are up to date on vet recommended vaccinations including FVRCP (cats) and Rabies.
All our animals have been treated for parasites (internal and external) before adoption.
Cats are SNAP tested for FIV / FeLV before adoption. We will always disclose their medical status.
Animals in our care receive veterinary care and treatment for all medical issues before adoption is allowed. We will indicate if any animal has an ongoing medical concern and requires special care. In these cases, we take extra steps to ensure adopters can provide the care they need.
We provide up-to-date medical records as part of the adoption paperwork.

As an associate of Humane Canada, we follow their position that all organizations involved in the adoption of dogs and cats should incorporate a spay/neuter program.
We ensure our animals are spayed/neutered prior to adoption, unless medically contraindicated. -
Humane Canada & Mississauga Humane Society supports microchipping as the preferred method of permanent identification.
All of our animals are microchipped to help identify them if they are lost.
When you adopt an animal from MHS we’ll provide you with documentation so you can update the microchip information to your name and address. -
Our foster-to-adopt trial period is designed with your family and your new pet in mind. If things aren’t working out, simply reach out and we’ll arrange for the pet to return to their foster home.
We understand every situation is different, and we’re happy to extend the trial period if needed to help you make the best decision for your household before finalizing the adoption.
If you’ve completed the adoption process and your situation has changed please contact us. MHS is committed to all our animals, even those who have found homes. We'll take them back into our care and help them find a new home.
